Ingredients

  • 1 pound loaf of frozen garlic bread Thawed completely
  • 8 ounces thin spaghetti Cooked according to package directions
  • 8 ounces mozzarella cheese Shredded from a block
  • 56 ounces crushed tomatoes Builds the heavy gravy
  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef Provides a savory foundation
  • 1 cup onion Small diced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil For sautéing the aromatics
  • 1 tablespoon garlic Minced finely
  • 1 tablespoon italian seasoning Adds an herbal note
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil Enhances the tomato flavor
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt To taste
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper For mild heat
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes Adds lingering warmth

Equipment

  • 1 Large skillet For simmering the meat sauce
  • 1 Large baking sheet Lined with foil for easy cleanup
  • 1 Sharp knife For scoring the bread border
  • 1 large soup spoon For pressing down the bread center

Method

  1. Heat the olive oil over medium-high heat and cook the onions, garlic, italian seasoning, basil, salt, and peppers for two minutes.
A wooden spatula pushes warm diced onions, minced garlic, and dry herbs in oil.
  2. Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook for six minutes until the meat is completely crumbled, then drain the grease.
  3. Stir the crushed tomatoes into the beef and simmer over medium-low heat for twenty minutes to thicken the liquid.
A wooden spoon stirs bubbling, thick red meat sauce inside a cast iron skillet.
  4. Cut the thawed bread in half, slice a shallow border inside the crust, and press the center down to create a hollow cavity.
  5. Toss the cooked noodles with sauce, pile them into the bread boats, top with mozzarella, and bake at 375 degrees for twenty-five minutes.

Make sure not to cut all the way through the bottom crust when hollowing out the loaf, otherwise the rich sauce will leak onto the baking pan.
